Sensory Friendly Research for the Real World

When we think about our senses, we often refer only to those 5 senses we learned as children: smell, sight, taste, touch and hearing.

But there’s more to our sensory system than meets the eye (mind the pun). Our senses register input coming in from a range of environmental elements, often at the same time and overlapping. But – we have more than 5 senses mentioned above.

Say hello to the 3 other primary senses: proprioception, vestibular and interoception.

Together, these senses regulate movement and balance and provide internal signals that gives us feedback on our environment and wellbeing.

Once we overlay the social environment, we have a rich landscape on which to better understand how our sensory preferences influence how we work.

On May 22nd, I presented our Sensory Friendly research as part of QUT’s Business breakfast series in Brisbane. Starting with the data highlights from our Sensory Friendly Retail research (in partnership with Nature) , we then moved into the data from our current Sensory Friendly Workplaces Tool (a collaboration with Caroline Mills from Western Sydney University).

The questions came thick and fast. Sensory friendly working is hitting a nerve – in all the right ways.
