The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower

I heard about Hidden Disabilities Sunflower – Australia & New Zealand in 2021 when a family member purchased a Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard and proudly came to show me and describe why they find it is useful on public transport or out shopping. As they described it, the lanyard provides a mechanism for self-advocacy and empowerment and is an effective communication tool in triggering situations. I was keen to understand more about rh Program and contacted Sandee Facy. We discussed the Scheme, its progress in Australia and why championing for lived experiences is so important.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower was initiated by the Accessibility team at Gatwick airport in 2016, looking for ways to enhance the experience for passengers who have non-visible (hidden) conditions. Backed by the aviation industry, the Sunflower was chosen for its bright, joyful aesthetic and because it is easily recognisable in crowded environments. Through its lanyards, badges and wristbands, The Program offers its wearers a choice of when and how to display the Sunflower in public places.

The program provides training for organisations to help employees understand the Sunflower symbol and support customers who use it.

There are now many Sunflower-friendly destinations around the world including airlines and airports, cultural destinations, transport networks and entertainment venues. Millions of Sunflower lanyards have been sold across the world.

Now the custodian of Bayley House, the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme Australia and NZ supports the entertainment, travel and tourism industries including the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Australian Open and Yarra Trams.

I suspect we will see more Sunflower-friendly spaces crop up in shopping districts and public transport, providing a mechanism for self-advocacy for employees and customers 😊.
